In 2020, as I turned 37, I found myself reflecting deeply on my past. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36, and as I watched my own daughters, 14 and 10 at that time, I was transported back to my teen years. The emotions from that time came flooding back, the chaos, the fear, and the deep sense of isolation I felt as my mom battled cancer.
Six years after my mum’s initial breast cancer diagnosis, just before my 18th birthday, she passed away. That loss shaped me in ways I couldn’t fully understand at the time. Looking back, I realise how deeply I needed emotional tools to help me process what was happening. Without them, the pain and confusion I carried became my Achilles’ heel in adulthood.
Now, as a mum to two teenage girls and a BRCA1 gene carrier, I understand this journey from both sides, as the daughter who lived it and the mother who wants to do it differently.
